The Play | 2015- ongoing | Video-performance series

The Play is an ongoing work, initiated in 2015, consisting of a series of video performances. It examines the language of mass media, questioning its methods and their effects on audiences.

In the performances, Akkel revisits a children’s game he often played in his childhood: selecting a word and repeating it until it becomes alienated and emptied of meaning. New words can continually be added to the series. For the current two performances, he chose “Terörist” from Turkish media and “Ausländer” from German media — both cliché and overused words that carry strong social and political implications.
