The Path — Installation view, Tempelhofer Feld, Berlin, 2021
The Path explores the critical relationship between self and city. In this work, Akkel reflects on his migration to Germany and the existential challenges he faced while living in Istanbul, before eventually settling in Berlin.
The structures form an endless pathway. Stairs that lead nowhere have lost their primary function, creating a labyrinth-like experience that evokes the realities of metropolitan life. The recurring motif of stairs also recalls the highway footbridges Akkel frequently crossed during long commutes across Istanbul.
In addition to the sculptural installation, The Path incorporates a series of cultural and interdisciplinary festival-like events that expand on its core themes.
