May I Be Here? — Object, Berlin, 2024
May I Be Here? explores questions of public space ownership, drawing on shared narratives of urban transformation in Istanbul and Berlin. The work consists of a sculptural object, video performances, and collages.
Inspired by the way the construction industry mimics the survival strategies of wild weeds—plants that push through cracks in concrete and cobblestones to claim space—Akkel originally conceived the project as a public intervention at the Zoologischer Garten U-Bahn station. However, due to bureaucratic restrictions, the installation was not approved and instead evolved into a series of performances.
The sculptural object represents the overlap between the unrealized installation and the gestures performed, embodying both the limits of urban space and the resilience found within it.

When the planned installation at Zoologischer Garten U-Bahn was not approved, Akkel instead carried out a series of six performances at the site, dressed in construction worker clothing. From this series, three performances are presented: the first, the third, and the final action.
May I Be Here? — Video performance I (First action, interrupted by police, Zoologischer Garten, Berlin, 2021)
The first action was interrupted by security and police.
May I Be Here? — Video performance III (Third action, Zoologischer Garten, Berlin, 2021)
Despite this, he repeated the performance on five more occasions.
May I Be Here? — Video performance VI (Final action, uninterrupted, Zoologischer Garten, Berlin, 2021)
In the final action, there was no interference — the guards even acknowledged him. This recognition marked a symbolic shift: he had “earned” his place in public space.

The collages are printed on three different A2-sized papers and reference parallel urban transformation narratives in Berlin and Istanbul.
